Abstract

This study explores the application of discussion method in improving students' engagement and learning achievement at class level. Data were collected through classroom action research involving students of class IX-3 of MTs Negeri 1 Balikpapan. The results show that the discussion method is effective in overcoming the limitations of shy students, creating an inclusive learning environment, and deepening students' understanding of the learning materials. Nevertheless, practical challenges, such as time management and teacher preparation, are still a major concern. Evaluation of the learning cycle showed an improvement in students' learning achievement over time. In conclusion, the implementation of the discussion method has a positive impact on student engagement and learning achievement, but needs better planning and customisation to maximise its potential. This research provides insight into the effectiveness of the discussion method in the context of classroom learning.
