Abstract

Education is a process of interaction between an educator and students which aims to encourage the learning process. The main goal of education is to provide the knowledge and life skills necessary to face the real world. Teachers have a key role in improving the quality of education in Indonesia. In an effort to improve the quality of education, a good understanding of mathematical concepts is very important. This is because a strong conceptual understanding is the basis for understanding more complex mathematical concepts. The task of teachers and educators is to ensure that mathematical concepts are taught using learning models and media that are appropriate to the material presented. This research uses the Classroom Action Research (PTK) method. This research consists of two cycles to achieve the stated objectives. The research results showed that there was a significant increase in student activity and learning outcomes. In the first cycle, there were no students who fell into the "very active" category, but in the second cycle, all students had become active in learning. The Problem Based Learning learning model applied allows students to express their opinions in discussions, participate actively in groups, and respond to the results of their colleagues' work. This approach also allows students to orient problems, organize information, collect data through experiments, solve problems, and create work. Apart from that, they also learn to reflect on their learning and work on evaluation questions. Thus, the Problem Based Learning learning model has been proven effective in increasing student activity and learning outcomes. This shows that this approach can improve the quality of education in the classroom and help students achieve the expected competencies.
