Abstract

This study aims to improve English learning motivation through the role playing method among first-grade students at SDK Mbomba, particularly in the topic of color recognition. The method used is Classroom Action Research (CAR) with a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative data. The research subjects consisted of 28 students, and the implementation was carried out in one cycle consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data collection instruments included structured observation, teacher’s notes, and visual documentation, without the use of written questionnaires due to the students' limited reading abilities. Observation results showed that more than 75% of the students demonstrated improvement in activeness, confidence in performing, and the use of color vocabulary in English. The role playing approach effectively created an enjoyable learning environment, boosted students’ self-confidence, and facilitated contextual and communicative learning. Overall, the learning activities took place in an enjoyable, educational atmosphere, aligned with the cognitive developmental stage of early elementary school children.
