Abstract

This research aims to improve early reading skills through the application of the phonic method for first-grade students at MIN 4 Tidore. This classroom action research was conducted in two cycles, each consisting of three meetings. The research subjects were 25 first-grade students at MIN 4 Tidore. Data were collected through observation, early reading skills tests, and documentation. The results showed a significant improvement in students' early reading skills. The percentage of students achieving the Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKM) increased from 32% in the pre-cycle to 60% in cycle I, and 88% in cycle II. The class average score also improved from 62.4 in the pre-cycle to 68.8 in cycle I, and 78.6 in cycle II. The implementation of the phonic method proved effective in enhancing students' phonological awareness and their ability to recognize the relationship between sounds and letter symbols. The use of varied learning media and consistent practice contributed to the successful implementation of this method. This study concludes that the phonic method can be an effective strategy to improve early reading skills in first-grade elementary school students
